A Note About The Fireworks Since at least the early 1950's, LHYC has sponsored the annual Fourth of July fireworks display. Until very recently, this display was fully funded by the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club as a service to the community. Due to changes in fireworks regulations, about 11 years ago the display was required to move from the LHYC docks to a barge display in the middle of the lake. While safer and allowing for a larger display, the change required renting, transporting, and launching 4 barges, approximately doubling the cost of the display. (In order to ease concerns about locating barges, and to significantly reduce transportation costs, the Club purchased four barges last year.) Fortunately, annual fund raising efforts have been successful in offsetting these increased costs, although LHYC continues to finance about 50% of the total costs of the display. The municipalities, businesses, and individuals below were kind enough to contribute to the fireworks display last year, and most have already signed up again this year as sponsors. We thank them all for their support. If you would like to contribute, please send an email to fireworks@lhyc.com, and we will be glad to contact you. Once again the fireworks display went off in 2007 on time and on budget. While it is never apparent as the display lights the July sky, it takes many months and many people to get the "works" in the air. Did you ever notice, for example, that the barges suddenly appear on the morning of the fireworks, and are gone before you are on the lake the next day, a holiday for most of us? Thanks to the LHYC Fireworks Committee (which once again had the barges out of the water before 8AM on July 4), the NJSP Marine Division, the emergency services of Mount Arlington, the Jefferson Department of Public Works, and the Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department for their time, effort, and cooperation in making this another successful event. |

Fireworks Safety |
For your own safety, please respect the perimeter established by the State Police around the barges. Buoys will be set up in the early evening establishing the perimeter in accordance with safety regulations. With so many boats on the water, it only takes one spark to create a major tragedy. Also note that, following the display, the barges will be towed back to the LHYC docks. Please keep well clear of the towing operation, as the barges do not stop for anything or anyone once they are under way. Also note that private fireworks displays of any kind are illegal in New Jersey. Lake Hopatcong has lost two homes and numerous fingers to private fireworks displays in the last 15 years. |
