Junior Sailing Instruction

The LHYC Junior Sailing Program is offered to members and friends of members.  Lessons generally run from the last week in June to the third week in August.  The program is intended to instruct at all levels of interest and ability.  For example, we have many beginners as young as seven, but a huge hit over the last several years has been a beginning sailing class for teenagers.  We have racing classes, but also have classes for those who do not wish to be competitive.  Our Racing Program this year will include a number of away regattas, as well as race-specific coaching.  The sailing program this year will also  feature the return of our Saturday morning program for member children at the beginner and intermediate level.  Sailing is taught using club and member-owned Optimist Sailing Dinghies, with older children using their own Lasers.  Safety is emphasized at every level.  A participant must be a competent swimmer.  All participants' swimming ability will be verified prior to the first lesson.  All students are also required to wear a "lifejacket" at all times. One of the highlights of the LHYC Junior Sailing Program is the Back-to-School Regatta, held on the second or third Saturday in September, and now in its 16th year.  The regatta features as many as 100 Optimist Dinghy sailors, and 20 Laser Radials.

Meet Our Instructors

Head Instructor Brian Kitchin, who has been involved with the LHYC program as both a student and an assistant instructor for many years, will be returning to our program this year as our lead instructor.  Brian has an excellent sailing resume as both a participant in Lasers and Thistles, and as an instructor.  Qualifications include American Red Cross First Aid & CPR, US Sailing Level One Instructor, Boat Safety Course, and Senior Life Saving.

Assistant Instructor, Pat Flinn is returning this year with 1 year experience as Assistant Instructor at LHYC, and several years teaching privately.  He graduated from the LHYC Jr. Sailing Program. Pat has over 11 year’s experience crewing on Thistles, Stars, and E-Scow sailboats. Pat brings excitement and challenges to the program. He is encouraging and works well with the young sailors.
